Permissions Policy – Feminist Studies, Inc.

Feminist Studies, Inc. is committed to supporting the dissemination of scholarly work while protecting the rights of our authors and maintaining the sustainability of the journal. The following policy outlines standard terms and fees for reprint and reuse permissions.

  1. General Principles
  • All content published in Feminist Studies is protected by copyright and may not be reproduced without prior written permission, unless otherwise specified.
  • Permissions are granted on a nonexclusive, one-time use basis unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • All reuses must include full and proper acknowledgment of the original publication.
  1. Types of Use and Fee Structure

Anthologies, Edited Collections, and Books

Fees for reprinting articles in anthologies or books are based on length, format, and distribution.

  • Full-length article (approx. 8,000–10,000 words): $800
  • Medium-length article (3,000–7,000 words): $400–$600
  • Short article (under 3,000 words): $150–$300

Fees may be adjusted based on:

  • Print run and format (print, ebook, or both)
  • Commercial vs. scholarly use
  • Extent of material used (full article vs. excerpt)

Course Packs and Classroom Use (Print or Electronic)

For course packs and classroom distribution, fees are generally assessed on a per-copy basis, subject to a minimum fee.

  • Per-copy fee: $2–$5 per article per student
    or
    $0.10–$0.50 per page per copy
  • Minimum fee: $25

Permissions cover one-time use for a specific course and term.

Fees may be reduced or waived for:

  • Small classes (typically under 10 students)
  • Nonprofit educational use

Electronic Reserves / Learning Management Systems

  • Permission is typically granted for password-protected course use (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard) for a single academic term.
  • Fees are generally aligned with course pack rates or may be waived for limited, nonprofit educational use.

Republication of Excerpts

Short excerpts (e.g., a chapter portion, selection, or brief quotation beyond fair use) are priced proportionally based on length and context.

  1. Fee Adjustments and Waivers

Feminist Studies, Inc. reserves the right to:

  • Adjust fees based on the nature of the request
  • Offer reduced rates for nonprofit, scholarly, or low-circulation uses
  • Waive fees in cases where the use significantly advances academic or public scholarship
  1. Required Credit Line

All reprints must include the following acknowledgment (or similar):

  1. Request Process

Permission requests should include:

  • Title and author of the article
  • Description of intended use
  • Format (print, electronic, or both)
  • Number of copies or expected audience
  • Publication details (publisher, title, expected publication date)

  1. Rights Granted

Unless otherwise specified:

  • Permissions are nonexclusive
  • Valid for one-time use only
  • Do not include the right to sublicense or reuse in future editions without additional permission

  • Payment instructions will be provided upon approval of the request
